The Water Cooler – Coming January 1, 2010

Justin Daigle (.com) v7 will officially be known as The Water Cooler.

While not actually on the JDC domain, nor to be considered “the JDC forums,” most likely I will create a new front page for the site allowing you to navigate to either my blog or TWC.

If you couldn’t guess from what I just said, TWC is going to be a forum. It’s not going to be focused on tech, but will provide areas for discussion of music, movies, sports, tech, and everything else under the sun. Ignore the message on JDC’s redirect pages that say “JDC v7, Coming this November.” I’m too lazy to change them, and most likely the message will remain as that until TWC opens.

Expect more on TWC in the coming months.

Edit: Also of note, look over there.

JDC: Then and Now

Even though it’s only been justindaigle.com for about a year and a half now, my site (and especially my blog) traces back to over two years ago. Basically, Rob asked me if I wanted hosting for a blog. “Sure.”

So, if you dig back several pages, you can find my very first post. The funny thing is, my host then and my host now were both named Tom (although the funny thing is with other Tom I went through Rob to get hosting, and now Rob goes through me to get hosting). Then, a few pages later, I brag about my “new” domain at that time, justindaigle.com. After going through several crappy skins and one or two good ones (including this one), I somehow managed to arrive at JDC v6, going on v7. Counting the upcoming v6-v7 transition, about three or four of these versions came as the result of something going wrong during a server move. Makes me wonder… what version is JDC going to be on in another two years, and what will it be like?

As for the upcoming v7 (which actually has its own name, which will be revealed in a few days), it’s been delayed. Its official release date will be January 1, 2010, which is still quite awhile away. It’s going to be big. Very big.

So big it might even ha-…

The official announcement of what will be expected of v7 will come in a week or so.

Tutorial: Editing iPhone/iPod Touch Legal Page

I couldn’t find this elsewhere, so I’m guessing either nobody’s thought of doing this before, or people are too afraid of Apple’s legal team to post this. However, I’m not.

Anyway, I’m too lazy to provide screenshots for this tutorial, so for those who don’t know what this is for, this modifies the screen in Settings -> General -> About -> Legal on an iPhone or an iPod Touch.

Requirements:

1. A jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch. If you don’t know how to do this… this guide probably isn’t for you. While the file you’ll be modifying isn’t actually important, I still wouldn’t recommend you screw around with your system files if you don’t know how to jailbreak.

2. A file browser with some means of modifying files, such as iFile.

3. A basic knowledge of HTML.

Directions:

1. Navigate to /Applications/Preferences.app in iFile or another iPhone file browser of your choice, as long as it allows you to open files as text and save them.

2. BACK UP the acknowledgements-ipod.html or acknowledgements-iphone.html file. (see below)

3. Open acknowledgements-ipod.html (iPod Touch) or acknowledgements-iphone.html (iPhone; untested) as text in your file browser.

4. Use common sense to edit the file based on the formatting already used.

5. Save the file.

6. Enjoy!

Disclaimer: I assume no responsibility for any damage done to your device by following this tutorial. It’s really just a long way of saying “The files you’re looking for are in /Applications/Preferences.app. What you choose to do with them is your responsibility.”

Also, this is probably my first and last tutorial for awhile. I seldom ever actually think of anything to write up that somebody else hasn’t already figured out first.

A bit of a side issue: I had to send in my desktop for repairs, and my laptop isn’t really equipped for any sort of work at all. May be a couple more days until I actually get around to anything productive. Can’t do much on a 1280×800 laptop screen. =/

Edit (11/7/2009): Accidentally put “preferences-idevice.html” as opposed to “acknowledgements-idevice.html” in the directions above. Fixed.
