Well, WLM is lacking since it’s controlled by someone else and WLM groups are limited to 20 members.
IRC is lacking since it’s nearly impossible to set up, old, and… generally awful.
So I dug around a bit, and decided to give OpenFire a try.
It’s configuration is entirely graphical, and it’s quite easy to use.
Since it’s mainly sending text around, my home server seems more than up to the task, and handles it quite well.
Anyway, while I originally created it for the purpose of a private room I have set up, it also does regular person-to-person IM and users can create their own rooms as well.
Also, you’ll need to download the Spark client from there.
It’ll ask for a server name. In case you can’t read the directions at the top of the sign-up page, it’s home.justindaigle.com.
Also, when it asks for username, it means username, as in what you put in the first box on the sign-up page.
Not your real name (the contents of the second box).
Thought I’d clear this up, as people have failed to notice this it seems.
Here’s hoping my IM server makes it big!
Oh. Update on TWC. I’ve finally gotten to see the skin. It seems to have a bit of a long way to go, but I’m still hoping it’ll be ready on time for a New Year’s Day release.
It’s a few hours away for me, but for some others it’s already here. Merry Christmas!
If I could, I would release TWC, but it isn’t ready, and as a matter of fact I haven’t even seen the theme yet.
Here’s a bit of a preview, showing the current staff lineup.
Also, as my gift to the readers of my blog (finally paid off, huh?), in absence of the TWC release I was hoping for, here’s the echoShell 2.0 source code.
Considering I never really started work on eS2, it isn’t much different from the final 1.0 (in fact it actually still displays itself as 1.0).
Also, I neglected to remove the expiration date. That is left as an exercise for the reader.
Hint: Look in Options.vb for the strings ReleaseStatus and ExpirationDate.
I also neglected to remove the product key requirement.
It will produce an annoying trial nag screen, but set TrialStatus to Trial and VLK to VLK.
If you know what you’re doing, go ahead and disable product keys and activation in a more thorough manner.
First thing you’ll notice is the bad animation. The whole thing was hand drawn, using my infamously bad handwriting.
Not to mention, it’s supposed to look like it was drawn on a chalkboard.
Also, it’s hosted on Vimeo. Normally, I’d either host it on my own site (but I can’t remember how I did it last time) or on Youtube (but Youtube’s become so rabidly pro-copyright that they disabled the audio on it and I had to delete it altogether).
As for TWC, it’s now in Private Beta 2, and it should be on schedule for a January 1, 2010 release. If it’s finished early, I may release it on Christmas.
Expect more updates on TWC… later.
